The names of the following scales come from something called church modes.  Through modification over the years these scales eventually grew into major and minor scales.  Much of this can be heard in "chants" or gregorian chant.

 Basic Scale
Modal Name
 A B C D E F G A
 Aeolian
 B C D E F G A B
 Locrian
 C D E F G A B C  Ionian
 D E F G A B C D
 Dorian
 E F G A B C D E  Phrygian
 F G A B C D E F
 Lydian
 G A B C D E F G
 Mixolydian

You may notice that two of these scales will stand out tonally.  Aeolian and Ionian.  Play them out and listen to how they relate to what is used today in your composition.
